Biography
Rory started playing the Baritone horn at 8 years old, under teacher Michael Howard of the British Tuba Quartet. Rory soon transferred to Euphonium at 13 as well as beginning lessons with Tuba player, Rachel Coles. At this time he began to play with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain (NYBBGB), where he received tutorship from Robert Childs, Peter Christian and Glyn Williams. Rory was also involved in ensembles at the Northampton Music and Performing Arts Service including the County Youth Brass Band and County Youth Concert Band. Whilst here he went on tours to Italy, Poland and Hungary, and performed at Symphony Hall, the Royal Festival Hall and the Royal Albert Hall.
When he was 16 Rory began receiving lessons from Keith Muggeridge, former Baritone of the Fairey Band. He was also awarded a Scholarship for advanced tuition with David Childs at the Birmingham Conservatoire. The NYBBGB, at this time, recorded an album with Soloists Jens Lindemann and Ian Bousfield under Musical Director Bramwell Tovey. In 2006 Rory gained a Performance Diploma from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music on Euphonium and started to play for the Virtuosi GUS Band. With GUS, he played in many of the major Brass Band contests, including the British Open Championships, the National Brass Band Championships, and the All England International Masters. In his time spent with GUS, they recorded a CD, A Mingled Charm and performed on BBC Radio 2's Listen to the Band.
In 2008 a quartet Rory co-founded in 2007 called the Primo Tuba Quartet gave a performance of The Force of Destiny, by Verdi at the Schools Proms held at the Royal Albert Hall. By this time Rory had also begun to learn the Trombone with teacher Brad Turnbull, on which he received a Performance Diploma in 2009.
In September of 2009 Rory began his studies as a Scholar of the Royal College of Music, London. There, Rory studies Trombone with Byron Fulcher and Euphonium with Andrew Fawbert and Byron Fulcher. At the RCM Rory has performed with Sinfonietta on Trombone and Bass Trumpet and the Brass Ensemble on Euphonium and Trombone. In October Rory started to play Euphonium for Zone One Brass, a London based ensemble supported by the RCM. Whilst performing with them at the London Southern Counties Area, he won the Euphonium Prize for the Championship section. He also received mentions in the Brass Band Press for his solo in Le Rois D'Ys at the Spring Festival. Rory is now in his second year at the RCM and has been awarded a further Scholarship for the next three years of his studies.
In the next three years Rory is looking to build up on his experience as an ensemble player on Trombone, Euphonium and Bass Trumpet.
